Checklist for a Long-Haul International Flight, by Matt

The following list is a supplement to our video, “How To Survive a Long-Haul International Flight.” While not the most complete list, this is a comprehensive summary of the things we do when traveling long distances by air. For more details, please watch the video, which is more thorough in explaining the ins and outs of our choices:

The Fishing Vest

In the video, Laurin was wearing a fishing vest because it had so many pockets. The logic behind this is that certain airlines have a weight limit for your carry-on luggage, and every little ounce can impact that limit. If, however, you don’t care how people look at you in an airport, consider wearing a fishing vest to carry all the additionals you might want on the plane. The airline is not going to weigh you, and the vest can be easily removed to pass through the x-ray machine at TSA. In the video, Laurin carried the following items in her fishing vest’s pockets:

·        Tissue

·        Chewing Gum

·        Anti-bacterial wipes

·        Hand sanitizer

·        Toothbrush/toothpaste

·        Healthy Snacks

·        Immune support tablets (Airborne)

·        Moisturizing lotion

·        Ink pen

In addition, we recommended in your carry-on:

·        Multivitamins

·        Neck pillow (we recommend an inflatable pillow for C-spine alignment; Matt demonstrates in the video)

·        Good noise-canceling headphones

·        Any prescriptions you might have (very important)

·        Bottle of water

·        One change of clothes in case your check-through baggage is delayed or lost

Some tips for actual travel on the plane are as follows:

·        Try to get an extra row or bulkhead seat for more legroom (more details in the video)

·        Don’t take off your shoes; your feet will swell and you may not get them back on

·        Following that, wear comfortable, worn-in shoes to give your feet room

·        If you’re traveling with another, book aisle and window in a three-seat configuration since middle seats get filled last

·        Get up and move around during the flight

·        Take a short nap if you arrive in the morning

·        Don’t take sleeping pills for the flight if you’ve never taken them before.
